Summer intern Dana Afifi creates our Value playbook

When you ask Dana Afifi, a senior at NC State University, why she wanted to spend the summer as a Healthcare Developer Intern, the answer comes easily.

“To live out a good life, you need good health care. There’s no way around that.”

She’s always had an interest in health care – many of her experiences coming from interning and volunteering in hospitals and clinics. “I’ve always wanted to completely understand what it means to give quality care and you can’t do that when only looking at one point of view,” she said.

As our Health Care Developer Intern, Dana is spending the summer working on two big projects that will help bring higher quality and lower cost to our members. She’s working to create a playbook that outlines our value strategy, in addition to an implementation manual for primary care.

“Insurance is such a determining factor in the quality of care you can receive. I knew Blue Cross NC would be a great fit.”

Both materials will help incoming and existing employees understand our value programs and partnerships.

Her Assignment This Summer

Working on the Healthcare Development Team has been an amazing experience for her, she said. We serve as the business lead and coordinate with stakeholders to implement health plans.”

Her favorite part of the internship experience? “This will guide me in the direction I want to take my career – whether that be working directly with patients or behind the scenes in the policy aspect of things,” said. “Ultimately in whatever decision I make, I want to make the best positive impact.”

Opportunities at Blue Cross NC

Since joining in May, Dana said she’s been pleasantly surprised by the development opportunities and the never-ending possibilities. “I can’t believe how many people I’ve met who have moved around the company, even if it’s something they haven’t done before.”

Dana graduates December 2019 with her bachelor’s in human biology. After graduation, she’s thinking of working for a health insurer or in a clinical setting. For now, she’s excited to spend the summer at Blue!
