Business analyst intern learns Blue Cross NC is more than claims and writing plans
Getting a chance to contribute to hands-on projects made Patrick Schilling want to apply for a summer internship at Blue Cross NC. It’s the people and culture that made him want to stay.
“My perception, like many others, was that insurance companies could be less than exciting places that focus mainly on claims and writing plans,” he said. “That has not been the case during my internship.”
10 weeks of summer learning and growing
Schilling is a senior at Western Carolina University studying Computer Information Systems and Sports Management. He learned more than he could have ever hoped for during the 10-week program.
Since the start of summer, he’s worked with multiple teams as an internal consultant. Schilling worked to identify the gaps in linking Blue Cross NC sales numbers to various sales and marketing campaigns.
“My analysis role was based in a market refresh project with the goal to identify the documents inside of Blue Cross NC that need to be changed in accordance with 2020 CMS regulations,” he said.
In addition to honing analysis skills, Schilling also learned what it’s like to work full-time in an office setting.
“Having never worked in a formal office setting before, it was a good introduction to how one functions. I learned how to run meetings, ask coworkers for help and multitask to accomplish as much as possible each day,” he said.
From college classroom to an office building
Schilling was uncertain of spending a summer at Blue Cross NC because he felt he lacked experience in health care and insurance. He now realizes the many job opportunities that go far beyond filing claims and writing policies.
He also said it’s the diversity of skills we all bring to the table that makes working here so satisfying.
“I’ve realized through this internship that the more points of view you can tackle a project from, the better chance you have of implementing a solution that benefits the most people,” Schilling said.
