Feeding our health heroes: it takes a village

Across the country, health care workers are selflessly caring for their communities during COVID-19 and beyond. The Durham Bulls, the minor-league baseball team of Durham, North Carolina, are stepping up to the plate to lend their support to our local health heroes.

On June 11th, the Durham Bulls launched their Summer Community Outreach program. We at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina were honored to join them to thank health care workers.

For 8 weeks this summer, the Durham Bulls, Blue Cross NC staff, and Wool E. Bull (the Durham Bulls mascot) are delivering 600 prepared meals every week to local hospitals. Each meal is individually packaged and made by Blue Cross NC’s campus cafe vendor, Compass. These meals also include a special thank you note from Wool E. Bull.

Emily Almond, the Durham Bulls marketing & fan engagement coordinator, said delivering the meals has been a humbling experience.

“Being able to serve health care workers rather than them serving us for once has been really rewarding,” she said.

The Durham Bulls are also celebrating health care workers virtually. They’re using social media to share videos, photos, and special messages from fans. If the Durham Bulls baseball park reopens this summer, the Bulls will feature our health heroes’ names in lights during home games.

“Blue Cross NC is honored to work with the Durham Bulls to show our appreciation to health care workers in the community we call home,” said Reagan Greene Pruitt, vice president of marketing and community engagement at Blue Cross NC.

Do you know a health care worker who deserves to be celebrated? The campaign also allows Bulls fans to nominate community health care workers who have gone above and beyond during COVID-19 and other times of need. Look out on the Durham Bulls social media for updates on the nomination process.
