Your Sinus Infection Survival Guide

We are in the middle of winter here in Colorado, which means not only snow but dry, cold air! For many of us, the winter also means dry coughs, nagging headaches, and runny noses. Yuck!  While many times these symptoms are caused by the common cold, they could also signal something more serious: a sinus infection. Don’t worry, though — we’re here to help you stay healthy this winter! Here is a handy guide to help prevent a sinus infection, and a rundown on how to get cost-effective treatment with your Friday health plan if you get hit with a sinus bug.

Stay hydrated

It is no secret that Colorado is dry and is even worse in the winter. Drinking water and staying hydrated is a must and will keep your nose from getting too dry. According to Healthline, it is best to drink eight ounces of water every two hours. Limiting caffeinated and alcoholic drinks is recommended and can help keep you hydrated.

Be sure to get your flu shot

The flu shot is your best defense against influenza. Clear enough. But, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, getting your yearly flu shot may also prevent you from a dreaded sinus infection. The flu shot is a free benefit for Friday members and is available at doctor’s offices, grocery stores, and pharmacies. Find one near you.

Get relief with at-home remedies

Over-the-counter nasal decongestants and pain relievers can offer temporary relief, and nasal irrigation solutions can also help pain, but be sure to speak with your medical provider to ensure you’re using the correct remedies safely and effectively. Using a humidifier at night can create some much-needed moisture in such a dry climate and help clear your nasal passages. Remember to keep up with the maintenance of your humidifier and clean it out regularly to avoid the spread of mold and bacteria in your home.

Seek medical attention

Are your symptoms persistent and not going away with home treatment? Have you had your symptoms for over a week? It may be time to seek medical care and, of course, we’ve got you covered! As a Friday member, we have a few, cost-effective options to help.

Use one of your three doctor visits

As a Friday member, you get three free visits with your primary care doctor. Schedule an appointment and visit your doctor for free. (Not available on the Bronze HSA plan.) Don’t have a primary care doctor yet? Use your member portal to find one near you.

Get help with Teladoc

Teladoc is the most convenient way to get remote care from a medical professional for non-emergency illnesses like a sinus infection. Every Friday Health Plan member can speak to a doctor for a $45 flat fee online or over the phone 24/7. Access Teladoc by visiting their website here: Teladoc. (This is an added service to your plan, so it does not go toward your deductible.)

Visit an in-network urgent care

Can’t wait to visit your doctor? Across Colorado, Friday Health Plans has a vast network of conveniently located urgent care centers. Most plans have a $75 flat fee to visit the urgent care*. You can see the full list and find the one that’s closest to you!

*Catastrophic and Bronze HSA must first meet the deductible, and then urgent care is $0.

Get on-demand urgent care sent straight to you with DispatchHealth

Currently serving Friday members in the Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs service areas, DispatchHealth is on-demand urgent care that comes straight to you. That’s right. A medical professional drives to you (within an hour of your request) and treats you where you’re most comfortable, for a $75 flat fee.
