Expecting during COVID-19
Expecting a baby can an exciting time, but with COVID-19, many expecting moms have to navigate new territories such as virtual appointments and ever-changing rules and regulations. Some may be worried about the imposed risks and the uncertainty of what labor will look like.
While we may not know what will happen in the next few months, it is good to be prepared and to see what you can do to make sure you keep you protected and help you be less stressed. Because as many people know, expectant moms need to relax while they can
Here are some things to consider while pregnant during COVID-19, along with resources to help guide you.
Protect Yourself
While the research on the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women is still ongoing, the Center for Disease Control has recently found that pregnant women may experience more complications from COVID-19 and are 5.4 times more likely to be hospitalized.
The best thing you can do is protect you and others around you. Continue to follow social distancing guidelines, wash your hands, wear a mask in public, limit group gatherings, and continue to stay at home as much as possible.
Keep your Doctor in the Loop
Many expecting women have had to limit their in-person appointments and rely on phone or video appointments. While many expecting mothers have been able to go to in-person appointments, 48% of pregnant women in the U.S. are relying on virtual care. If you have any concerns or discomfort, let your doctor know right away. By not being there in person, it can be hard to get the full picture, and your wellbeing and the wellbeing of your baby is the most important thing! Do not be afraid to speak up and express your concerns and keep open communication with your doctor.
Understand Hospital Rules
If your due date is coming up, talk to your doctor about the hospital visitor policy beforehand. Many hospitals have implemented rules about visitors during the pandemic. Some hospitals in Colorado are letting visitors come to hospitals on a limited basis, but as cases rise in some areas across the country, polices may change. Consult with your doctor to be prepared and let your loved one know. It’sone less thing to worry about.
